    In the past year I’ve had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Shafhid on a variety of issues related to the emergency care of radiologic events. Few people in the world posses the knowledge and first hand experience as does Dr. Shafhid. His work with the sunken Russian nuclear submarine, and Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident, place him in the special category of “world expert” on this topic. His teaching skills and practical approach have allowed me, as a bio/hazmat team medical director, to be better prepared for the eventual occurrence of a radiologic accident, or purposeful detonation of a radioactive device.

    We are all fortunate that Dr. Shafhid has chosen to share his vast knowledge with all of us.

    I have been both spiritually and intellectually enriched by having the privilege of doing some interviews with Dr. Igor V. Shafhid, author of the new book, "Inside the Red Zone: Physical and Spiritual Preparedness Against Weapons of Mass Destruction." Dr. Shafhid is a graduate of the Russian Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and has served for ten years in the Russian military. His area of expertise is the effects of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons on the human body. During the Chernobyl accident in 1986, Shafhid studied the effects of radiation on the military responders and had hands-on experience with acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and chronic radiation illness (CRI). He is an expert in the strategic use of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and has worked in military toxicology, principles of military epidemiology, and infectious disease control and prevention.

Police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, health and hosptial staff will all gain first hand information and vivid examples of what to do and what to avoid in a CBNE attack.
